April May June & July 2010

The temperature tells us It's summer and outside activities are in full swing. We had field day again this year as you know by seeing the article in the Evening World. Our two nets are active, Tuesday 7PM on 28.400 USB & Wednesday 7PM 2 meter 146.985. You can join this net without belonging to the Club.

We have 2 test sessions left in 2010 one at the Spencer Christian Church, Corner of Montgomery & Market St. @ l0AM. The next 2 sessions will be Nov 20th and Aug 28th at lPM @ the Hamfest, Spencer Fairgrounds. There were about four taking the test in June and all passed and one took both Tech and General and almost passed the General with out studying. You need to bring ID and copy of your license if you are upgrading your ticket.

Those of us who didn't attend the Dayton Hamfest had our regular May meeting at Chambers and enjoyed breakfast and conversation. While there we discussed our coming election of officers and came up with a slate. We proposed the slate at our June meeting and since nobody objected to being nominated, we voted with the following to take office on July 1 st.
  • President Steve Brown K9RTO
  • Vice President Tom Gwaltny N9PDC
  • Secretary and Treasurer Katie Smith K9INU

Some of us meet between 8AM and 9AM for breakfast or just a cup of coffee @ Chambers Restaurant which gives us a chance to chat before the meeting and then go across the street to the Christian Church. We will try to have the program announced on the club KB9MZZ repeater. The club now has a web site which will be upgraded as needed. To access the site go to http//www.owencountyARA.org

This is something I found in my e-mail, whether is works or not I do not know. lt was titled GOOD VISION IN A DOWNPOUR
How to achieve good vision while driving during a heavy downpour.
We are not sure why it is so effective; just try this method when it rains heavily. This method was told by a Police friend who had experienced and confirmed it.
It is useful ... even driving at night. Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during !leavy doWI).pour, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is still bad .... In the event you face such a situation, just try your SUN GLASSES in your car, as you are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision but also might save your friend's life by giving him this idea ...
Try it yourself and share it with your friends!??? Amazing you still see the drops on the windshield but not the sheet of rain falling. You can see where the rain bounces off the road. lt works to eliminate the "blindness " from passing semi's spraying you too. Or the "kickup" if you are following a semi or car in the rain. They ought to teach that little tip in driver's training ... .it really does work.
This warning is a good one! I wonder how many people know about this. A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore, Texas she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining. though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!
When she explained to the highway patrolman what had h-appened he told her something that every driver should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the highway patrolman told her if the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement you car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred. the patrolman said this warning should be listed on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR IC~ along with the airbag warning, We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don/t tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry. The only person the accident victim found who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had a similar accident, total his car and sustained severe injuries.
NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on. Hope this helps to save a life.

Club dues are collected for the July 1,2010 to June 30, 2011 in June. The dues are $12.00 for a full membership with voting rights and $6.00 for associates. The dues help to pay our expenses. Please help keep the repeater in operating condition. THANKS TO EVERYONE who has paid their dues as our insurance is due soon.

The repeater is there for any ham to use. Join us on our regular Wednesday night net @ 7 :OOPM. The net control is now on a rotation schedule. If you would like to be added to the net control list, check in and let us know. The KB9SGN 146.895 repeater is being used the first Wednesday of each month for ARES weekly net. This is being done to remind us we have a working backup repeater here in Owen County.

The committee has been meeting regularly each month. We have taken flyers advertising our event to several ham fests including the Indy hamfest in July. We will have some forums, a Commercial Vendor and WIFE ALERT CRAFTS -- Discovery toys and Something Special (purses etc). We will be changing our food menu a little also.
We are trying to make our event more interesting for those who attend. We are looking for suggestions to improve our event for this one or next years.
